The Caligulas works against people with powerful legal and political resources. The less information the institution holds about the people who take part, the less can be taken from it.

This is not a feature of the site. It is how the institution works.

What the Caligulas keeps

The institution’s database contains the following.

The names of the nominees, the categories they are in, and the published records against them. The full record of donations made, shown only as: the amount donated, the nominee it was cast against, and the time it was made. If a donor has chosen to be publicly named, the chosen name and the optional public statement are kept with the donation. If a Right of Reply has been formally approved for publication, the text of that reply is kept with the nominee record.

That is the complete list.

What the Caligulas does not keep

The institution does not keep donor email addresses. It does not keep donor billing addresses, phone numbers, payment details, or any data given to Stripe during checkout. It does not keep the names of donors who chose to be anonymous. It does not keep the contents of Right of Reply submissions, only the text of replies that have been formally approved and published. It does not track visitors. It does not log IP addresses beyond the minimum required by its hosting provider. It does not use third-party tracking scripts. It does not run a mailing list.

What Stripe keeps

Donations are processed by Stripe. Stripe collects the donor’s name, email, billing address, and payment information at the point of checkout. The donor agrees to Stripe’s own terms at that point. The Caligulas does not access this information, does not keep it, and does not link it to any record in its own database. The connection between a donation in the Caligulas database and the real person who made it is held by Stripe alone.

Right of Reply submissions

Submissions made through the Right of Reply form are sent directly to a private inbox. They are not written to the institution’s database. If a reply is formally approved for publication, only the text of the reply appears on the nominee’s page. The submitter’s name, contact information, relationship to the nominee, and any supporting documents stay in the inbox and are not published.

Formal requests for information

The Caligulas keeps the information described above and no more. If any party (legal, governmental, or otherwise) needs information about a donor or contributor, requests about payments will be sent to Stripe. Requests for information the institution does not hold will be refused on the grounds that the information is not in its possession.

The institution works this way as a matter of practice, not as a favour. A record that does not exist cannot be produced.
